While the first vacuum cleaner was invented all the way back in 1860, progress was quite slow. The first robotic vacuum was invented in 1968 and was followed by a number of other models, each bringing something new to the table.

The first fully automatic robot vacuum was created by iRobot in 2002. Since then, it has sold several million units. It was a game changer for two reasons.

First of all, it was the first robot vacuum to become popular with regular customers. Previously, robotic vacuums hadn’t received much attention because they were exclusively sold in the industrial cleaning market. The iRobot changed that. By creating a household robot vacuum, iRobot introduced their product to the masses.

Secondly, the iRobot introduced some amazingly efficient, clever design innovations. Some of these made it into other robotic vacuums, while others are yet to be repeated.

We’ll discuss a couple of the most interesting ones here.
